讀《觀山》：山與山之間的留白

在《觀山》裏，最先吸引目光的或許是左側的峭壁。岩面上有細直的線，也有較寬的灰墨。把目光往上移，山脊間的一點赭紅，便從大片黑、灰與紙白之間浮現出來。
由近景走向遠山
近處的樹與岩石界線較清楚，右方遠山的輪廓則較淡。兩者之間有一段幾乎空白的地方。視線越過這段紙白，再遇到遠處的山形，距離感便在這一來一往之間形成。
兩種尺度看一幅畫
先把整幅畫放在眼前，留意深淺墨塊的分佈，再放大看山石上的線條。遠看連成一片的山體，近看是長短不一的筆跡。與《魚樂圖》並看尤其有趣：在那幅畫裏，留白讓魚有水可游；來到《觀山》，紙白讓山與山之間有了空氣。
Looking at Mountain Landscape
Start with the cliff on the left, then look towards the paler mountains on the right. The untouched paper between them does much of the work of creating distance. A small touch of red near the ridge draws the eye back into the darker foreground. Zoom in, then step back to see how individual brush marks become a mountainside.
